Educational Facilities Sample Projects

Slippery Rock University, On-Campus Student Housing Exciting new construction of multiple buildings to house students in a new modern “suite” environment.  Residence halls and R.O.C.K. Apartments at Slippery Rock University are more than just places to sleep.  They provide opportunities for students to become a part of a community.

BDA services included HVAC, plumbing, electrical and sprinkler design for the new dormitory buildings. The mechanical design included a water source heat pump system, variable speed pumping systems, direct digital control systems, plumbing systems and fire protection.  Electrical design included 12,470 volt underground site power distribution system, site lighting, emergency generator power systems, fire alarm systems, lighting and 120/208 volt secondary power distribution systems.

California University of Pennsylvania, On-Campus Student Housing
Times have changed. Students have changed. Now, Living @ Cal U is a whole new experience.  Cal U is transforming what used to be called “dorm” life into “The Suite Life.”  BDA was an integral part of the design team for 5 new, state-of-the-art, air-conditioned residence halls.

Cal UBDA services included HVAC, plumbing, electrical and sprinkler design for the new dormitory buildings.  The mechanical design included a large geothermal system consisting of multiple 380’ deep wells, variable speed pumping systems, direct digital control systems, plumbing systems and fire protection.  Electrical design included the 12,470 volt underground site power distribution system, site lighting, emergency generator power systems, fire alarm systems, lighting and 120/208 volt secondary power distribution systems.

aChatham College Jennie King Mellon Library -
The Jennie King Mellon Library, established in 1869, is Chatham College's research and informational hub. The library's main collection consists of over 90,000 monographs, 1000 journal subscriptions and numerous electronic resources.

BDA services included HVAC, plumbing and electrical design for an existing main campus library.  BDA inspected and evaluated all of the existing building mechanical and electrical equipment. Design of the renovated structure included reconditioning of existing equipment and new equipment.

Carnegie Mellon University is a national competitor in the Solar Decathlon.  For the competition, Carnegie Mellon students in the schools of Architecture and Design teamed up with engineering students from the University of Pittsburgh and students in the interior design and industrial design programs at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. These students, along with many corporate sponsors and volunteer workers, make up the Pittsburgh Synergy team.

aBDA was the engineer for several of the University’s School of Architecture Solar Decathlon Projects. Mechanical design has included a solar assisted geothermal heat pump, two temperature solar thermal domestic hot water heating system, and the integration of a grid connected photovoltaic system.  The building is part of the national competition held in Washington, DC.

Other Sample Educational Projects

Carnegie Mellon University – BDA services included Laboratory, clean room and office HVAC and plumbing design.  The HVAC system included a high-pressure VAV/make-up air system with variable speed fans.  The outside air quantity to makeup laboratory exhaust was controlled using airflow measuring stations.  To conserve energy, individual hood controls were provided to turn exhaust systems on and off.  Each hood control was interfaced with a make-up air box.  Plumbing design included laboratory gasses and standard plumbing design for offices.  Offices were conditioned by a VAV system that included perimeter baseboard heat.  Air distribution to the clean room was from overhead laminar flow diffusers.

Cabell County Schools – BDA services included analysis and modeling of humidity and roof storm drainage problems for a 265,000 square foot high school located in Huntington, WV.  High building humidity was causing rusting of metal partitions walls and lifting of carpeting.  The building analysis included hourly simulations of interior environmental conditions and a review and analysis of building mechanical systems.  New mechanical systems, and associated electrical systems, were designed to ameliorate the environmental problems.

Franklin Regional Junior High - BDA services included evaluating problems with the school’s HVAC system.  BDA analyzed and reviewed direct digital control systems, heating and cooling systems, building air distribution, indoor air quality complaints, problems with the kitchen and pool HVAC systems, and the central boiler and chilled water plants.  From this analysis corrective actions were provided along with their associated costs.

Trinity School - BDA services included complete HVAC, plumbing, sprinkler and electrical design.  HVAC system design included a combination of zoned all-air systems and constant volume all-air systems.  Electrical design included emergency power, fire alarms, data/com wiring, lighting and power distribution.  The electrical design also included a complete photovoltaic system, off-peak energy storage and design of the renewable energy control systems.  The specified plumbing system used low-flow fixtures and energy efficient water heating systems.  Sylvania-Osram, Duquesne Light and The Department of Energy supported this project.

Turkey-Foot School - BDA services included HVAC, plumbing, and electrical design for a school located in Confluence, PA.  Mechanical system design included a central chilled water plant; renovation of a coal fired steam boiler plant, a large VAV system, CO2 actuated demand ventilation systems, central locker room facilities, renovation of a central well water system and of a service water heating system, and complete pneumatic control systems.  Electrical design included emergency power, fire alarms, central clock system, intercom system, lighting and power distribution.
